Each Christmas Eve the inmates of the South Dakota State Penitentiary and Jameson Annex are remembered with a bag of candy provided by churches, groups and individuals from this area.
The “Christmas Sack” includes peanuts, hard candy, a candy cane, homemade fudge and a handmade card. For some it is the only Christmas gift and card they will receive. (We’d like to be able to put at least 2 pieces of fudge in the sacks – so we need a lot of this special fudge.)
The fudge will be picked-up for delivery at 10:30am, Sunday, December 14th. Please leave donated fudge in the church refrigerator. For more information contact Bev Maxwell, 335-1576.
Fudge recipe approved by the penitentiary:
(A copy also is posted in the Fellowship Hall)
1 + ½ Sticks butter or margarine
½ lb Velveeta cheese
2 lbs Powdered sugar
½ cup Unsweetened dry cocoa
1 Tbs Vanilla
½ cup Chopped walnuts
½ cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips
In a large saucepan melt cheese, choc chips and butter together. Stir together until smooth. Remove from heat and add vanilla and nuts.
In a large bowl, stir together sugar and cocoa. Add melted cheese mixture, mix well.
(The candy may be very stiff, and mixing with gloved hands may be necessary.)
Press candy evenly in a 9×13 in pan coated lightly with non-stick spray. Cool and cut into 24 pieces.
WRAP EACH PIECE INDIVIDUALLY IN PLASTIC WRAP.
(No plastic bags-not allowed in the prison. Please mark outside of container with total number of pieces of fudge.)
